Fees

The Hon John Collier (1850-1934), the Glass Hooper sisters, Dulcie and Joyce, painted in Collier's studio, 181x211cm

Dulcie Laird Clowes (left) (1891-1972) and Joyce Durbin Glass Greener (right) (1893-1990) both née Glass Hooper. Daughters of George Frederick Glass Hooper (1864-1932 of Hatherleigh Devon) and Anabel Mary Guitton Montefiore (1870-1904 of Charmouth, Dorset). The sisters were painted just after the death of their mother, in Collier's studio with all their furnishings from their home in Palace Court, Bayswater (the seating to the left is offered as lot 655 in this sale).

The sisters' relationship with each other enforced separate sittings and they were only allowed into the studio together for the final sitting when the hands were painted.

Provenance: the family enjoyed a long and documented friendship with Collier and his family. The painting has remained in the family, the vendor being Joyce's granddaughter.
